Hunter S. Thompson typed postcard with handwritten notes, postmarked 24 March 1961 from Monterey, California. Composed on a Manor House printed card, where Thompson served as caretaker, he writes to his friend Paul Semonin in Aspen, Colorado. In full, ''Mr. Thompson ain't goin nowhere. He cleared the temple today & will now rest for quite a while. Really wanted to get over there & now it seems out of the question. One chance in 100. Unless you see fit to swing down this way before heading east. I advise it. If you leave America without seeing Big Sur, you are a man with a blind spot, [John] Smythe was here for three days. Understand he spent 5 with you. My condolences. He was, in a word, intolerable. I finally had to run him out with a threat of violence. On Monday gave a display of mild violence for the crowd -- most of them left quickly. Violence, it seems, is its own reward. Anyway, send word. HST''. Thompson circles his initials and handwrites ''Probably won't see you for a while'' and ''cite specific photos'' along margins. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.25''. Light wear, overall in very good condition.
