Hunter S. Thompson typed postcard with handwritten notes, postmarked 31 March 1961 from Big Sur, California. Composed on a Manor House printed card, where Thompson served as caretaker, he writes a cheeky letter to his friend Paul Semonin, who was apparently working on a book. Thompson begins with a handwritten note at top, ''- from the desk of The Cheap Gambler......'' and then continues in type, ''In the midst of reading Steppenwolf it occurs to me that you might think it odd that I have not asked what your book 'is about.' Well, aside from the obvious reason, I have a strange, irrational certainty that I know it well -- not the words, of course, but the spirit of the governing hand. The title alone -- and the photo of the Big Kansas Mover (which hangs before me, next to your Moe Mountain lewd) [photos taken on their cross-country trip in 1960] -- sends my mind reeling back along a thousand beer-stained trails, and one way or another you have trod them all, forever lugging that rotten little notebook. So, you will need all the luck I can wish you, plus a hell of a lot more -- and the rest, I hope , is in your sac. HST''. Thompson circles his initials and draws a little money sack underneath, as well as handwrites along the bottom ''Are you coming?''. Postcard measures 5.5'' x 3.25''. Light wear, overall in very good condition.
