Original hand-drawn sketch by comic art legend Sheldon Mayer, circa early to mid-1930s when the young Mayer was still a teenager. From the window of an apartment building, a young woman makes a request to an Italian mariachi band; according to the typed caption affixed to the verso of the sketch, she asks them to play ''My Yiddishe Mommer'', a vaudeville song made famous in 1928. Interestingly, the woman resembles Olive Oyl of ''Popeye'' fame, which debuted in January 1929. Signed ''Sheldon Mayer'' at bottom, sketch on flexible illustration board measures 10.625'' x 8.125''. Also signed by Mayer on the verso, with his Harlem, New York address. Small area of dampstaining at top edge and minute paper loss to lower left edge, otherwise near fine condition.
