Incredible visual archive of over 100 silver gelatin photos, documenting the partition of India during the mid-20th century. Majority of photos are housed in a contemporaneous green photo album that begins with ''Calcutta Riots 1946'', with approximately 30 photos documenting the aftermath of 16 August 1946, the day of fighting between Muslim and Hindu mobs. Several photos follow, entitled ''Aug. 1947 Celebration - Our House'', showing decorative lights to celebrate the independence of India. Approximately 25 photos of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi follow, with captions in Hindu. An additional five photos include Gandhi's funeral procession, and then subsequent photos, comprising about 40, are post-1950, showing a tram car burning in College Square, the death of Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, soldiers in 1970, and a photo showing the fire in the Centtral Bank Building on 1 April 1974. An additional 14 images, housed separately, are mostly of Gandhi from the 1950s, with captions in English on verso. Photos range in size from a 10'' x 12'' image of Gandhi to 2.5'' square, with most approximately 5'' x 3''. Source of photos is unknown, possibly a Indian photo-journalist given the quality of the photos and access to important events. Damage to a few of the photos, but overall in very good condition, separated in the green 14.5'' x 10.25'' album by tissue guards.
