39-star United States flag, circa 1889 just before the Dakotas were admitted as states. Since North Dakota (the 39th state) and South Dakota (the 40th state) were added the same day, on 2 November 1889, a 39-star flag was never formally issued, though they were informally made and used in the Lakota Territories in the anticipation of statehood. Flag has 39 stars, cleverly designed in an alternating 7/6 vertical design so as to look symmetrical. Cloth flag measures 24.25'' x 17.5''. Some age discoloration and discreet soiling, overall in very good condition.
