Magic lantern slide, picturing President Abraham Lincoln in General George McClellan's tent at the General's campsite at Antietam. Taken by Alexander Gardner on 4 October 1862, two weeks after the Union victory at Antietam, President Lincoln felt that a personal visit was required to convince the General to seize the moment and pursue General Robert E. Lee's retreating army. McClellan stalled however, and Lincoln would remove him from his command a month later. McClellan, in turn, would then run against Lincoln for the 1864 Presidential election. Colored glass slide measures 4'' x 3.25'', cased in a wooden holder measuring 7'' x 4''. Near fine condition.
