James Madison military appointment signed as President during the War of 1812. Madison here appoints Samuel Yates as Second Lieutenant on 1 January 1813, shortly after hostilities erupted the previous year between England and the United States, in a conflict that would result in the burning of the White House. Signed ''James Madison'' at lower right and countersigned by Secretary of War James Armstrong. With embossed paper seal at lower left. Document measures 14.5'' x 9.75'', matted with a portrait engraving of Madison to a size of 18'' x 24''. Mounted to board and some tears along folds with small amount of paper loss on right side. Some discoloration throughout. Overall in good condition.
