Civil War magic lantern slide, picturing Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Cold Harbor in 1864 with his favorite horse Cincinnati. Grant famously rode Cincinnati to Appomattox Court House to negotiate the Confederacy's surrender, and the Washington D.C. monument dedicated to President Grant even shows him horseback on Cincinnati. Grant was an extraordinary horseman, setting jump records as a cadet at West Point, and even eluding a gauntlet of snipers by riding off the side of his horse during the Battle of Monterrey in the Mexican-American War. From the collection of T.H. McAllister of New York, glass slide measures 4'' x 3.25'', cased in period metal. In very good condition with excellent photographic quality.
