First edition of ''Slavery and the Constitution'' by abolitionist William I. Bowditch. Boston: Robert F. Wallcut, 1849. In this important anti-slavery publication, Bowditch doesn't attempt to deny that the U.S. Constitution allows for slavery, but declares that pro-slavery laws are invalid on their face and that it's immoral to obey them. Bowditch was an active member of the Underground Railroad, sheltering escaped slaves at his home in Massachusetts. He famously sheltered the son of abolitionist John Brown as well as Ellen and William Craft, escaped slaves from Georgia who posed as an ailing white man and her attendant, respectively. Book runs 156pp. and measures 5.75'' x 9.5'' in original green wrappers. Wrappers partially detached near bottom, and light overall wear. Very good condition.
