George Washington autograph letter signed ''Go: Washington'', and then additionally signed with his surname in writing his nephew's name, ''Bushrod Washington Esq.'' From Mount Vernon on 30 October 1797, Washington writes at length regarding a ''singular'' oddity regarding his land holdings, specifically that a writ docking entail of land can't be found in the court records. Published in Volume 36 of ''The Writings of George Washington From the Original Manuscript Sources, 1744-1799'', letter reads in full,

''My Dear Sir / Your several letters - Opinion and copy of the Deed to William Williams for 589 acres of land have been duly received - and, for which I offer you my best thanks. -

It is a little singular that the proceedings for docking the intail of the above mentioned land, should not be found among the Records of the General Court, or in the Secretary's Office from whence it issued, and to which it most assuredly was returned.

As the intail of this land was docked on acct. of my purchase of a part of it I retained a copy of the writ - the Panel and Sheriffs return - from where the enclosed is taken and is the best information and clue it is in my power to give to direct a further search. / With affectionate regard / I am always yours / Go: Washington / Bushrod Washington Esq.''

In addition to serving as one of the executors of George Washington's estate, Bushrod Washington was appointed to the Supreme Court by John Adams in 1798. Single page letter measures 7.5'' x 11''. Some expert restoration along folds on verso, light chipping at edges, and faint shadowing under Washington's signature. Overall very good to near fine condition, with very bold writing and signature by Washington.
