Abraham Lincoln autograph letter signed as President, dated 21 August 1863. On Executive Mansion stationery, Lincoln intercedes on behalf of a young man from Springfield, Illinois for a spot in the U.S. Naval Academy. Writing to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, letter reads in full, ''Hon. Secretary of the Navy / My dear Sir / You will oblige me very much if you can find a place to appoint John J. Grimsley, of Springfield, Illinois, to the Naval School. / Yours very truly / A. Lincoln''. Single page on bifolium stationery measures 5'' x 8''. Toning, and separation starting along one fold. Some writing in pencil at bottom. Affixed at top of second sheet to larger sheet measuring 7'' x 10''. Overall very good condition with bold handwriting by Lincoln.
