George Washington signed check, partially printed from "To the Bank of Alexandria" and filled out entirely in Washington's hand just a few months before his death, dated 11 June 1799. Washington crossed out the pre-printed city of Alexandria and wrote "Mount Vernon". The check is payable to a Mr. John Moss for $397.50. John Moss is probably the John Moss who before the Revolution had an ordinary at Sugar Land Run about halfway between Leesburg and Alexandria. The check is joined to a paper background that gives the check larger margins. Total size of the check is 7" x 2 3/8" and the total size with the paper margins is 8 7/8" x 3 1/2". There is some minor loss of handwriting, apparently due to prior adhesion, where Washington writes out "fifty" cents and less drastically in the top loop of the "h" in "Washington". Excellent. Accompanied by PSA/DNA COA.
