Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed "Thompson", written on the address panel of this aerogram sent to his childhood friend Paul Semonin. Postmarked 24 April 1965 from San Francisco, Thompson writes in part, "Great jesus, man…It was warm here today and I, with a brutal no-sleep hangover, took Juan out to the beach and rested while he ran around naked and pissed on himself. It was decent sitting there with my dog and a book and a satchel of cold beer and my kid running around like a little animal in the sun. As always, I feel sure the only salvation is personal, and then only for moments here and there. Today I got a check for $100 from the Nation, so I can pay my rent only 10 days late instead of 2 months late like before. I'll send you a copy of the piece if and when it runs.
Right now I think I have a hell of a cold or even throat cancer. [William] Kennedy writes from San Juan…You are right in knowing NY will be a turning point for you and I'm not sure what to advise -- for either of us -- but before casting any lots I think we should sit down in some quiet place with no deadline and compare wisdoms. Maybe if I can figure out what to tell you I will know more what to tell myself. I suspect however, that the System kills those who actively fight it just as surely as it does those who love it, and that the only hope is to quit for real. Whether I have the guts to do this or not is another question. It means giving up a lot of illusions and maybe even some real possibilities. We'll see…What do you have lined up? -- Ringo".
