Hunter S. Thompson typed letter signed, with additional autograph note, composed of witty content including a mention of his prolific drug taking, and references to "The Rum Diary" and his then unpublished Hell's Angels book. Dated 9 February (1966), Thompson writes in part, "Midnight again. No time to think about human contacts…How does it feel to be a running dog of capitalism? I refuse to believe you have any grip on reality until you stop chasing nymphets from Louisville…Get yourself a sturdy wench who is dedicated to the class struggle.
But Save the high boy for me…My ambition now is to ride the bike to the NCAA basketball finals and then load up on LSD for all four games. I'm looking for a Ky-Duke final, which should generate real hysteria even without acid…
I can only assume that Pantheon was forced to reject the RD [Rum Diary]. But what's this about 'hard back rights……turning her flank'? Pantheon is a hardcover house. It's precisely this kind of splintered wisdom that's driving me wild. The last I heard Pantheon was set to publish the Rum Diary. As far as I know they have both manuscripts. I have none. If the fuckers won't tell me anything I have no choice but to write vicious letters…Somebody wrote the other day and said they saw an article of mine in some magazine that I've never even heard of. Meanwhile I have to borrow money to pay the rent. It's maddening…
