Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed ''Ike'' to his wife Mamie, dated 9 August (1944), as Supreme Commander of Allied Expeditionary Forces. Here, Eisenhower writes endearingly in response to his wife's ''outburst'' over his correspondence with her through aides and secretaries. Written in pencil, letter on two pages reads in part: ''Darling -- Today I think I'll get back to where I can mail a letter easily. Your teletype that you'd arrived in Denver chased me down and was reported over the phone to me. I'm a bit puzzled over your outburst about me sending messages via aides and secretaries. Naturally I cannot go to the telegraph offices myself whenever the spirit might move me. Sometimes, over miles of bad telephone cable I dictate a short message to you with instructions it is to be placed on the teletype at once. Naturally also it is an aide or a secretary that has to do the mechanical part of the transaction. To save me I can see nothing wrong in this -- if there is then I'll just have to send messages when I get back to the main headquarters, which is infrequently. Today my brother Roy would have been 52 years old, had he lived. I'd like to send a message to Edna -- but that's impossible...In my present location I have a nice camp -- much better than the one I recently left. But we're not really settled and won't be until we get our next main headquarters established. It is a long irksome business to move a staff the size of mine, together with all its collaborating bodies, and its signal communications. These last are enormous...Don't forget me -- always yours Ike''. Two page letter measures 8'' x 10.25''. Folds, light toning and minor glue residue at top of second page, else near fine. Accompanied by full transcription.
