Hunter S. Thompson letter signed ''HST'', with an additional autograph note signed, all composed to his friend Paul Semonin. Dated 29 December 1960 from Big Sur, Thompson's anti-anti-establishment humor is on full display: ''Dear Fireweather...Dog days coming soon. Back to SF on Jan 6 to seek work. C-J [Kentucky paper ''The Courier-Journal''] wants a story on 'Louisville secretaries in SF.' Also one on 'off-beat spots in SF.' These should me me sick enough to become a legitimate ward of the state...No dice on the money-front. How about you? / Answer, [signed] HST / Extra tidings -- just came up with a shot (Big Sur coast at dawn) that has put me in the front rank of American photographers.
Thompson then pens an autograph note at bottom, ''I just figured out my total income for the year - including such as reward $$ from Am. Exp, model fees, etc. - and it adds up to $970 / I wonder how much I spent this year?''. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Uniform toning, some chipping to edges and mild dampstaining at bottom. Overall very good condition.
