Two original albumen prints from 1891, taken by Northwestern Photo Co. of Chadron, Nebraska, whose outfit is well known for documenting the aftermath of the Wounded Knee massacre. At least one of the photos was taken on the 4th of July 1891 by photographer Clarence Moreledge at the Pine Ridge Agency, showing Sioux engaged in either the Scalp Dance or Omaha Dance. Photograph reads in the negative, ''Sioux Indians Dancing the Scalp Dance / P.R. Age[ncy] S.D.'', which was published in ''Eyewitness at Wounded Knee'', stating that the Omaha Dance was likely being performed, as the Bureau of Indian affairs banned the Scalp Dance due to its perceived militaristic nature. The other unpublished photo shows a group of Sioux outside a tipi encampment. Photos measure 7'' x 4.25'', affixed to an album mat measuring 10'' x 7''. Some buckling and staining to mat. Photos show good contrast, overall in very good condition.
