Very personal typed letter signed by Marlene Dietrich, with her autograph note, regarding the death of her former lover, Erich Remarque. Dated 29 September 1970, just four days after Remarque's death, Dietrich writes to her friend ''Scotty'' (possibly the photographer Scotty Welbourne) regarding her relationship with Remarque and how Paulette Goddard kept Remarque away from her. Letter reads in part, ''...I was alone when Remarque died. But I had known of his illness and by chance I tried to telephone him and he answered. I talked to him, sent him flowers every day and wires, which all arrived in the mornings because that bitch Goddard only came in the afternoon after her beauty-sleep...Now the bitch has all the riches: VAN GOGH s [sic] Cesannes, Modiglianis e.t.c.e.t.c. and the most beautiful carpets -- all priceless. Maybe that is why she never allowed him to see me. Maybe she thought he would give me some of his treasures. It could not have been jealousy, because she never loved him...I could not go to the funeral last Sunday...But I take it as my fault. I could have had it all, the name and the money. But I said: No. I wouldn't do it to Rudi [Rudolf Sieber]...'' Dietrich then adds a handwritten note, ''I have not heard from him but he must have picked up his ticket!! love / kisses / Marlene''. Single page measures 8.5'' x 11''. Some creasing, otherwise near fine condition.
