Hunter S. Thompson scarce autograph letter signed, written on 14 October 1959 according to notes provided by the letter's recipient, Paul Semonin, Thompson's friend from high school. In dramatic red ink, Thompson writes about moving back to New York city after a brief stint at his home in Louisville, Kentucky.
Letter reads in full, ''dirty Bush; Leaving Sunday - should arrive NYC that night. If you're in the city Monday, come by or call me at Connie's [Dibble, Thompson's girlfriend]. I'll be hiding out there until I can flee in the night to Otisville later in the week?
And for God's Sake, don't tell anyone that I've left Louisville. All sorts of people are after me - police, creditors, ins. companies, etc - and from what I gather, Forbes is eager and willing to finger me for the pinch. I don't want to go to the Tombs, so don't mention my arrival. Especially to Floyd - who probably sees a bit of Forbes at Columbia. Come by on Monday if you can, but otherwise ignore this news of 'The Second Coming.'
An unfortunate Bull Dance was responsible for my sudden departure from here. Everything is vile and threatening - and I'm very nervous about coming back up there. The damp stench of the Tombs hangs heavy in the air. So, anyway, or leastways - Cheerio: HST''.
In late August 1959, Thompson and his friend Gene McGarr were beaten up across the street from where Thompson's girlfriend, Connie Dibble lived, and Thompson is clearly nervous here about returning to the city. Two page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Light toning and creasing, otherwise near fine condition with bold writing. A scarce autograph letter signed by Thompson, whose typed letters are more common.
