Women's Political Union (WPU) button to promote women's suffrage. This ''Clarion'' button was made shortly after 1912 when California became the sixth state allowing women to vote, as represented here by 6 stars in the suffrage flag. Formed by Harriot Stanton Blatch, the daughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the WPU was the more militant of suffrage organizations, in contrast to the National American Woman Suffrage Association, the larger organization headed by Susan B. Anthony. Button features the ''Bugler Girl'', designed by Caroline Watts, using the purple and green colors of the UK suffrage movement. Measures 1.5'' in diameter. Very good to near fine condition with fully intact celluloid. An early and rare women's suffrage pin.
