First edition, first printing of ''The Late George Apley'', for which the author John Marquand won the Pulitzer Price for Fiction in 1938. The novel -- told in the form of a memoir by the eponymous wealthy Boston patriarch -- was also adapted into a play, feature film and television series. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1937, with ''Lovely Pearl'' on page 19 as required for the first printing and with the $2.50 price intact. Bound in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and top edge stained red. Book and dust jacket are in unusually nice condition; jacket has minor foxing and small chip, otherwise near fine. Book has discreet owner's name (front) and short inscription (verso) on free front endpaper, and vertical streaking to paper stock found in all copies, else near fine.
