Military engineer and Revolutionary War General, Tadeusz Kosciuszko autograph letter signed. Written in the third person, Kosciuszko addresses Lord Carnarvon (of ''Downton Abbey'' fame), in full, ''The General Kosciuszko is extremely sensitive to Lord Carnarvon's kindness for having approached Lord S.E.M. Duke of Portland on his behalf. He is asking him to please accept his most profound and sincere gratitude and esteem.''

A close friend of Thomas Jefferson, Kosciuszko was committed to ideals of the Enlightenment, and instructed in his will that his assets be used for the education and freedom of slaves. He helped design the fortifications at West Point, was made an American General after fighting in the Revolutionary War, and then led an uprising in his native country as Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces. Undated letter measures 7'' x 3.5''. Mounting remnants on verso, and repair of paper loss at top. Chipping at lower right edge, overall in very good condition with bold handwriting.
