World War II letter by a prisoner in the Mauthausen concentration camp, dated 13 May 1940. Single page letter bears two stamps by the Camp on the last page of its official stationery, and rules in German on the first page, which translate in part, ''The following orders must be complied with...Newspapers are permitted, but may only be ordered at the post office of the K.L. Mauthausen. / Packages must not be sent as the prisoners can buy in the warehouse. / Discharge applications from the protective custody to the camp management are futile. / Permission to speak and visit prisoners in the concentration camp are not permitted in principle. All mail that does not meet these requirements will be destroyed. / The Camp Commander.'' Untranslated letter in German measures 5.75'' x 8.25''. Small hole at intersecting fold, overall very good condition.
