First edition, first printing of ''Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade)'' by Mark Twain. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company: 1885. First printing of the beloved classic considered among the greatest American novels. Twain lovingly embraced the vernacular and regional color of the antebellum South, while at the same time questioning traditional attitudes, especially about race. Hemingway once said, ''All modern American literature comes from just one book by Mark Twain called 'Huckleberry Finn.''' First issue points include: (1) heading for chapter 6 reads ''decided'' (later corrected to ''decides'') on page 9; (2) ''Him and another man'' listed incorrectly with ''88'' on page 13; (3) page 57, 11 lines from bottom, reads ''with the was''; (4) tablecloth under the bust of Twain at frontis is visible and ''Heliotype Printing Co.'' imprint is present; (5) on page 155, the second ''5'' is missing; (6) date on the title page is 1885 and on the copyright page 1884. In publisher's full green pictorial cloth, stamped and lettered in gilt and black. Moderate chipping and edge wear to original boards. Minor foxing and toning throughout. Overall very good condition.
