Steinbeck inscribes the book to Helen Hayes' son: ''To James MacArthur / with pleasure / John Steinbeck'' in black ink to the flyleaf. Hardcover nineteenth printing of the first edition was published by Viking: New York: 1964. With dust jacket featuring an illustration of Steinbeck and his dog Charley. Bound in white cloth boards with illustrated maps of Steinbeck's travels on the endpapers and pastedowns. Measures 6'' x 8.5'' and runs 246pp. Dust jacket is in good condition, with chipping. Book is near fine. From the Helen Hayes estate.
