Iwo Jima hero, Ira Hayes signed envelope from his WWII recruitment training at Marine Corps Base in San Diego. In red ink, Hayes signs the return portion of the envelope, ''Pvt Ira H. Hayes / Plt. 701 R.D.M.C.B. [Platoon 701 Recruit Depot Marine Corps Base] / San Diego, Calif.'' Envelope is addressed to his parents, ''Mr. and Mrs. Joe E. Hayes / Bapchule Arizona''. Envelope is postmarked 24 September 1942 from San Diego on the front, and 26 September 1942 from Bapchule on the verso. Marked ''Free'' by Hayes in the upper right corner. Some soiling and torn along right edge from opening. Overall in very good condition.
