Archive of William S. Waide, Confederate veteran of the 18th Arkansas Infantry, Co. G, mostly related to his attendance at the 75th Gettysburg reunion, held from 29 June-6 July 1938. Approximately 2,000 veterans attended the reunion, from both the Confederate and Union sides, all aged in their 90s or older at that point. Waide, in fact, died one month following this reunion in Paint Rock, Texas, where he resided after the war. Archive includes Waide's Southern Cross of Honor (bestowed by the United Daughters of the Confederacy), the 75th Reunion program (stating that President Franklin D. Roosevelt attended), a photo and negative of Waide at the reunion, a pennant from the event, and a host of other other material related to the Gettysburg reunion, considered the last that these men would ever attend. Each veteran was required to have an attendant with them for the reunion (in this case, Waide's son) and to furnish a physician's statement, attesting that he was healthy enough to attend the event. Archive is mostly in very good to near fine condition, with the program folded from use and with pencil notations on cover.
