Jean Leon Gerome inscribes a cabinet card bearing an image of himself in profile, dedicating it to: ''Leslie D. Ward / J.L. Gerome'' in sharp black fountain pen. The French artist is known for defining the genre of Academicism. A label on the border credits the photographer Maison Ad. Braun & Cie. Verso bears a pencil notation identifying Gerome as the subject. Measures 4.5'' x 6.5''. Toning and some flecks of staining, else near fine.
