Photographer D.F. Barry semi-matte sepia self-portrait, taken with Sioux chief Rain-in-the-Face, who joined Sitting Bull to defeat George Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Like Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face spent the years after the battle in exile, returning to the Dakotas in 1880. Barry, who came from Wisconsin to set up a studio in Bismarck, N.D. in 1873, was one of the most famous photographers of the American West. He became known for his portraits of Indians, who called him the ''shadow catcher.'' He formed a friendship with Rain-in-the-Face in the 1880's. Photo, measuring approximately 7'' x 9.5'', is matted to an overall size of 9.5'' x 13.75''. Both image and mat are blindstamped, ''Barry''. Backstamp reads ''D.F. Barry / Photographer / Photographs of All Noted Indian Chiefs / 1316 Tower Ave. / Superior, Wisconsin''. Moderate chipping to verso of mat. Overall near fine.
