Gideon Welles, appointed Secretary of the Navy by Abraham Lincoln, signs an honorable discharge for J.A. Petrie. The document, dated 10 August 1865, states that ''...a reduction of the Naval force becomes necessary...'' due to the ''...preservation of the Union...'' The 10.5'' x 16'' document is signed ''Gideon Welles''. Official Naval document is blindstamped with the seal of the Navy Department. Welles was credited with building up the Navy and blockading Southern ports. Some paper loss, toning and foxing; overall good.
