French born American Civil War General Alfred N. Duffie autograph letter signed, dated 23 March 1863. Duffie writes to an unknown General just six days after his insubordinate, but successful charge at the Battle of Kelly's Ford that garnered him an immediate promotion. He writes, ''The 1st R.I. Cav. becomes pretty low and it is my duty as his former commander to ask...for the honor of this good Regt, which has been both my joy and pride to command...that you do all in your power to fill it up before the spring Campaing [sic]...A.N.Duffie act. Brig/Commanding 1st Cav. Brig.'' Card style letter measures 7.5'' x 9.5'' with some very light toning and previous mounting residue on verso. Overall very good plus condition.
