Very rare issue of ''The New York Times'' from 15 April 1865 announcing the shooting of Abraham Lincoln, with ''No Hopes Entertained of His Recovery'', along with the unfolding drama of the night of 14 April with the assassins still on the loose. Heading the news on the left side, the Times reports in several headlines: ''AWFUL EVENT. / President Lincoln Shot by an Assassin. / The Deed Done at Ford's Theatre Last Night. / THE ACT OF A DESPERATE REBEL / The President Still Alive at Last Accounts. / No Hopes Entertained of His Recovery. / Attempted Assassination of Secretary Seward. / Details of the Awful Tragedy.'' The Times goes onto report in four columns the details of the killing, including early misinformation that Seward was killed and that the assassin was ''about 80 years of age''. Details of Washington D.C. springing into action following the event are also told in detail, such as ''The entire city to-night presents a scene of wild excitement...the military authorities have dispatched mounted patrols in every direction...to arrest the assassins...Cavalry and infantry are scouring the city in every direction for the murderous assassins...'' The Times also recounts the attack at the home of Secretary of State William Seward, ''...About 10 o'clock a man rang the bell, and the call having been answered by a colored servant, he said he had come from Dr. Verdi, Secretary Seward's family physician, with a prescription...The man pushed the servant aside...'' Eight page paper measures 15.5'' x 21.5'', uncut along top edge with an unfolded size of 31'' x 43''. In very good to near fine condition, given age, with only light toning, minute foxing and chipping to right side. A fascinating real-time account of one of the most pivotal nights in the history of the United States.
