Civil War letter by T.N. McKinney of the 4th South Carolina Cavalry, the famed Charleston Dragoons. Dated 30 September 1864, McKinney writes from ''Camp 7 miles south west Petersburg'': ''...We had fight down on the picket line yesterday. The Yankees charged us on picket yesterday morning, drove us back. We had some skirmishing with them before I left. The Yankees was charging us all the time rather on our right. They sent me with dispatch to General Dunovant. My horse got sick and my lieutenant would not let me go back for I had rode so hard. The brigade went down and drove the Yankees back. I have not heard the particulars of the fight yet. Lieut Johnson was wounded in foot. Lieut Harlston of Charleston Light Dragoons was taken prisoner with ten men, none of our company was hurt as I heard of yet none of our company has not come in yet. John Chastain came in the other day. He was all right yesterday when I left him. The Yanks taken a round at me and Chastain but did not hit us, but they rub us pretty close. The Fifth Regiment lost five men, killed last night in the fight. I don't know whether the Sixth Regiment lost and killed or not. I expect they will fight today again. I suppose we will get the particulars of the fight this evening. We will if they don't fight again today. I heard they were fighting on the other side of James River towards Richmond. They are moving our troops in that direction, but I hear so many things be that and so they fight up at Petersburg regular that is and every day business there. The boys are all up. Sergt. J. B. Stephen has been sick few days but is about. He is some better. So must come to close for this time. You must excuse bad writing and spelling. Write soon. Remaining your friend, T.N. McKinney''. Two page letter is very good.
