Very rare second edition of ''Ulysses'' by James Joyce, limited to 2,000 copies of which this is #55. Paris & London: John Rodker for the Egoist Press, 1922. Book is signed on the front free endpaper, ''J.B. Thayer / June 1923'' by famed Titanic survivor Jack Borland Thayer, III, who dove into the icy waters as the ship was sinking. Of the Titanic survivors, the vast majority were saved by boarding lifeboats, with only about 40 survivors having jumped or fallen into the water. Only 17 years old when the Titanic sunk, Thayer lost his father to the ship, but his mother survived. He would go on to write ''The Sinking of the S.S. Titanic'' in 1940, in which he claimed to see the Titanic split in half as it sank, which, though ultimately proven correct, was not an accepted view of the tragedy at the time. ''Ulysses'' has been nicely rebound in marbled and leather boards. Measures 7.5'' x 9''. Crack to front hinge and some shelf wear, otherwise near fine. Of the 2,000 copies of this 2nd edition, 500 were destroyed by U.S. customs agents, with the remaining copies becoming very rare.
