First edition of the solar research conducted by Samuel Langley on Mt. Whitney, the highest point in the continental United States at 14,494 feet. Entitled, ''Researches on Solar Heat and Its Absorption by the Earth's Atmosphere / A Report of the Mount Whitney Expedition''. Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1884. This copy was gifted by Josiah D. Whitney, after whom the Mountain is named; Whitney gifted the book to the Whitney Library at Harvard University, with his bookplate appearing on the front pastedown. Book runs 242pp., plus numerous charts (some folding) and a lithograph of Langley's camp at the base of Mt. Whitney with protective tissue still intact. Throughout his life, Langley studied the effects of the sun, but at low Pennsylvania altitudes, until he was funded to study the sun's effects at Mt. Whitney. Hardcover book in publisher's cloth measures 9.5'' x 12''. Very good to near fine condition.
