First Lady Helen H. Taft autograph letter, written in the third person on a mourning card, imprinted with the Tafts' Wyoming Avenue address in Washington, DC. Dated 2 April to Vernon B. Hampton, Taft writes shortly after the sudden death of her husband, ''Mrs. Taft received your letter, and says that till her twelfth [year] she was a member of the 7th Presbyterian Church - and that the Church moving to the Country, she went to the Episcopal Church, where she has been ever since...'' Not signed. During this time, letters written in the third person, especially during periods of mourning, are not unusual. 3'' x 5.25'' card is in very good condition.
