As Governor of Massachusetts, John Hancock signs his full name in black ink to a document, appointing Seth Washburne Esq. to the position of ''Justice to the keep the Peace in the County of Worcester in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts'' on 1 March 1781. Hancock signs boldly at lower right with his usual paraph underneath the signature. Document retains its paper seal at top left and is co-signed by John Avery. Framed and matted above engraved portrait of Hancock. Document measures 11.25'' x 16.75'', framed to 16.25'' x 27''. Folds and creasing, otherwise near fine. Signatures are bold and striking.
