As President, Thomas Jefferson signs his name in black ink ''Th: Jefferson'' to a ship's passport concerning the ''Brig Betsey of York'' on 21 May 1807. Jefferson's succeeding President, James Madison, also signs his name in full at lower right in black ink while serving as Secretary of State. Document retains its paper covered seal at lower left and includes decorative nautical illustrations at top with scalloped edge. Matted and framed next to portrait engravings of each President. Single page vellum document measures 12'' x 17'', framed to 32'' x 26''. Weighs 8.8 lbs. Expected wear to vellum document with folds, portion missing at upper left and some discoloration; overall very good condition.
