Limited edition copy of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" signed. Random House: New York: 1957. Rand signs the tenth anniversary edition number 1,813 of 2,000 upon the limitation page, "Ayn Rand". Considered a definitive novel of the 20th century, "Atlas Shrugged" is Rand's skillful fictional vehicle for Objectivism, her philosophy of individualism. She states in the novel's appendix, "My philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute." The story depicts a society's slow collapse as men of ability go on strike against a creed that treats them as sacrificial animals. John Galt, leader of the strike, stands not only for free minds but also for free markets. Interest in "Atlas Shrugged" was renewed after the publication of a 2009 article by Stephen Moore, a free market advocate, in the "Wall Street Journal," though it had inspired scores of leaders before then. 6" x 8.75" book, in blue cloth boards with gilt lettering and blue top edges, is housed in the original 6.5" x 9" cardboard slipcase. Fading to slipcase; minor separation of binding at title page. Overall very good.
