Collection of photographs and a document owned by Cecil Kirk, a D.C. Metropolitan policeman during the 1970's and photographic expert who would serve as expert witness in the 1978 Congressional hearings regarding the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Lot consists of (1) seven black and white photographs of the 1971 May Day protest, (2) a printed document from Richard Nixon regarding the protest, and (3) five photographs of the address books of the Watergate burglars. The ''May Day'' photographs concern the 3 May 1971 protest in Washington D.C. where 12,000 people were arrested - the largest mass arrest in U.S. history. Photographs include three composite 8'' x 10'' images, each bearing eight to ten portraits of the protest leaders used for identification purposes by the police. The portraits include Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman as well as Linda Sue Evans, another member of the Weather Underground, Bernadine Dohrn, and leaders of the Socialist Worker's Party, Communist Party, The Students for a Democratic Society, and other left-wing groups. Four other photographs (one 8'' x 10'', three 8'' x 5'') are candid images from the protests. Lot also includes a printed statement from Richard Nixon (relayed by D.C. Police Chief Jerry V. Wilson) regarding the protests, dated 8 May 1971: ''TO THE FORCE: THE PRESIDENT THIS MORNING HAS ASKED ME TO INFORM EACH OF YOU OF HIS PERSONAL APPRECIATION, AND OF THE THANKS ON BEHALF OF THE CITIZENS OF THIS CITY AND OF THE NATION, FOR YOUR SERVICE IN KEEPING THIS CITY AND THE GOVERNMENT OPEN THIS PAST WEEK WITH A MINIMUM OF PROPERTY DAMAGE OR INJURIES. THE PRESIDENT STANDS BEHIND US ONE HUNDRED PERCENT.'' The second portion of the lot, concerning Watergate, are five images of the address books of the Watergate burglars. Four of the images are from the address book of burglar Bernard Baker and include the names of other burglars including Raul Gonzalez, as well as the main number for the Watergate Hotel. The fifth image is from another address book (presumably from Eugenio Martinez) which lists E. Howard Hunt's White House phone number: the connection that would be exploited by Woodward and Bernstein in their groundbreaking reports that resulted in Nixon's resignation in August 1974. Watergate photographs are cropped and mounted to a 14'' x 11'' mat board. Minor marginal wear, overall very good.
