General Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed to his wife, Mamie, written circa August 1942. In this month, Eisenhower assumed command of the Allied Force Headquarters, North Africa, which was established 11 August 1942 in London in preparation for a North African invasion. His letter reads, ''Dearest, The sergeant tells me that a pouch will leave this p.m. so I'm grabbing a chance, while my room is temporarily quiet, to dash off a line to you. I realize that my notes are spasmodically dispatched, and rather halting in expression, but I'm sure you can understand the reasons. While I believe that my letters, sent through the pouches, are not censored, I like to obey the rules laid out for censorship. There's no let up in the drive -- it's just grind away, all day, every day! Save if it is really exciting but unfortunately the most of it is drudgery. Recently 2 doz. eggs & a big box of candy (2 lb) arrived. These fellows -- Butch, Lee -- Micky, etc, frequently take such complete charge of my affairs that I don't learn about them for a day or so. Anyway, I've had eggs for breakfast the past 3 mornings, and thoroughly enjoyed them. I always feel a bit guilty, though, when I eat anything special. These people, even including babies and the such, have been so long without many items that we consider essential, that I feel almost like cheating when someone sends me a bite of candy or an egg. Nevertheless I am truly grateful for your thoughtfulness. We hope to get a place soon where we can at least -- once a week, be a bit quieter & walk out into the fields. Hope it works out but I'm fearful. Loads of love -- I miss you terribly, and what a heap of good it would do me to have a long talk with you.'' Eisenhower signs, ''Always your devoted / D''. Butch is Commander Harry S. Butcher, Eisenhower's friend and naval aide who wrote a controversial book after the war about his time with Eisenhower. 6'' x 9'' 2pp. letter is in fine condition.
