General Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed to his wife, Mamie, dated 21 August (1943). Separated from his wife by the war and an ocean, Eisenhower addresses Mamie as ''My Darling'' and expresses his dismay about not hearing from her more often. Letter reads in part, ''Sometimes I get so impatient at the long time between letters from you that I vow I'll write only when I receive one. But then I get to thinking of something I want to say, so I pick up a pen once more. And I must admit that when you do write you say a lot more than I do in my brief scrawls. I think, though, there is one thing you don't understand. Merely because some officer says he is coming over here does not insure quick delivery of a letter. If he is a 'low priority' passenger, he can be delayed several weeks along the route. Straight air mail is often faster. Am sorry Milton [Eisenhower's brother] could not sell his house...But I'm glad he's getting out of Washington...Well, so far I've had my 3 interruptions, but one of them was a long argument. That always takes something out of me. But if there were no problems -- and no argument -- wars would be easy to conduct. Well dear, I hope that soon I get a letter from you or [their son] Johnny. As I've told you so often, letters from you two are the real bright spots of this life here...'' Eisenhower signs, ''Always yours / Ike''. The 8'' x 10.25'' three-page letter is in fine condition.
