Jackie Kennedy letter on White House stationery, dated 11 May 1962, unsigned. Here, the First Lady writes to a Betty regarding the selection of official art to hang in the White House. She stresses the importance of finding patriotic art with historical resonance. Reads in part, ''Here are the pictures I told you I would let you know about with a little resume about each....As you can see there are only eight pictures. That is because we decided the only way for our Committee to accomplish something really worthwhile, was to settle only for the best...All these pictures are very expensive -- all have a reason for being in the White House. They are of great American or historical figures of interest...the pictures we acquire should all have a certain reason and appropriateness for being in the White House...'' Letter on 2pp. measures 6'' x 9.25'' with minor toning and foxing, else near fine.
