Rutherford Hayes document signed as President, dated 20 march 1889. Document is a Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States that commends First Lieutenant Charles Foote of the 22nd Michigan Infantry as a ''Companion of the First Class of the Military Order.'' The Military Order of the Loyal Legion was a patriotic order established on 15 April 1865 by officers of the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States who ''had aided in maintaining the honor, integrity, and supremacy of the national movement'' during the Civil War. Document has original red seal intact at lower right and is signed clearly, ''Rutherford B. Hayes'' and countersigned by Recorder in Chief, ''John Nicholson''. Measures 24'' x 19'' with a 4'' horizontal tear along right edge, significant dampstaining and toning throughout. Good to very good condition.
