President Franklin D. Roosevelt typed letter signed discussing the polluted waters of New York's Hudson River. Known for expanding the role of the federal government, Roosevelt here argues for local control, in responding to Doctor Scott Lord Smith. Reads in part ''...You are wholly right in regard to the polluted waters of the Hudson River. When I was in Albany I spent many hours trying to persuade municipalities to put in sewage disposal plants. As a matter of State government, we undertood, [sic] while I was in Albany, to eliminate all sewage running from State Institutions into the Hudson River...the problem is, of course, wholly one for the municipalities and not for the Federal Government...'' Strong black signature appears on card style paper with blue type. Dated 11 June 1935 on White House stationery, letter measures 7'' x 8.75''. Near fine condition. Lot also includes a copy of the letter from Lord Smith that began the exchange, dated 24 May 1935.
