Dwight Eisenhower autograph letter signed from Europe. In the midst of WWII, the five-star general writes to his wife Mamie. The letter, dated 26 January [1943], reads in part: ''My darling: Col. McCarthy starts back to the States this morning...we had a convocation of huge rank here - so you will know that I've had only a matter of minutes...to myself. But I do have time to tell you again that I'm prouder of you every time someone brings me news of the way you handle yourself - of the serene way that you (my mother, too, God bless her) brush off the chance to indulge in cheap publicity. You are a thorobred, and, merely incidentally, I love the hell out of you. Maybe even more than that, but if I were ever able in one letter to tell you exactly how much I love you there would be no reason for writing you again - because that's the only thing I ever seem to say...Always yours, Ike''. 2pp. letter on ruled stationery measures 8'' x 10.5''. Light toning and creasing, else near fine.
