16th century copy of Pope Pius V's order regarding the Franciscans in Spain. Datelined Rome, December of 1566, Latin manuscript translates in part, ''...Pius V declares that he has always exalted and favored those dedicating their lives to the divine cult and wishes that they obtain immaculate grace in their religion. However, since there have been those who have erred from the order of their founder and have decorated their order with practices hardly equal to his, having irreligious lives and behaving with unrestrained licentiousness, as it has been made known concerning the brothers of the Order of Saint Francis, who in various parts and provinces of Spain, have abused apostolic privileges and not followed a pious life. Thus Pius orders all bishops in Spain to suppress all houses and convents of the Franciscans that they may find in their dioceses and transfer them to other orders such as the Carmelites or Cistercians...''
