James Garfield telegram signed, ''J.A. Garfield'' during his ninth and final term in the House of Representatives before taking presidential office. Partially-printed telegram is dated 19 April 1880 and filled in with pencil, possibly by Garfield. Addressed to Charles Devins of the U.S. House of Representatives, telegram inquires as to the length of term of ''commissioners appointed by the Council''. Measures 9'' x 5.75''. Toning and minor pencil notations, with a tiny tear to center, else near fine.
