The author of the patriotic song, "America," or "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" writes the first stanza of the song, in full: "My country, 'tis of thee, / Sweet land of liberty, / Of thee I sing; / Land where my fathers died, / Land of the pilgrims' pride, / From every mountain side / Let freedom ring. / [signed] S. F. Smith." Single-page quote is dated 25 March 1895, less than a year before Smith's death. Measures 4" x 5.75". Lightly toned, else fine.
