Lot of 4 items pertaining to explorer Richard E. Bryd: two typed letters signed regarding his near-disastrous second antarctic expedition, a signed photo and a ticket to a reception given in his honor by President Roosevelt. Lot comprises: (1) typed letter signed upon his personal Antarctic Expedition II stationery, dated 24 July 1933. Letter to William Keeler of the Sun-Maid Raisin Growers Association reads in part, "My expedition is rapidly making the final preparations to sail south to Antarctica in September…I appreciate deeply the assistance you have already given, but I must have more supplies. Since a second ship has been found necessary we have nearly doubled our personnel and therefore I am asking that you help us out again by doubling your donation…[signed] R E Byrd". Single-page letter measures 8.5" x 11". Creasing and notations to bottom edge, else near fine,; (2) pass to the reception held in Byrd's honor by President Franklin Roosevelt on 10 May 1935. Pass bears a blind stamped seal. Numbered 231 and measuring 5" x 3". Fine; (3) photo of Byrd in uniform, inscribed, "To E Thompson / with warm / regards / R E Byrd". Also signed by two others. Glossy image measures 8.5" x 6.25". Near fine; (4) typed letter signed again to William Keeler, dated 4 August 1933. Letter reads in part, "…Your kind letter has encouraged us all…it is just such help as yours that is making it possible…[signed] R E Byrd". Single-page letter on Byrd's Boston stationery measures 8.5" x 11". Light creasing and pinholes to upper left. Near fine. Byrd almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning on the expedition but was rescued by colleagues and went on to undertake three more expeditions.
